The MDR-A50LV represents a noticeable step up in Sony’s lineup, offering a more detailed, open, and refined sound than both the MDR-W20 and MDR-W501. The bass is tighter and more controlled in favor of greater definition without compromising tangible and powerful bass. High frequencies are also more present, providing improved clarity and detail without becoming harsh. Overall, the MDR-A50LV has a flatter, more neutral tuning than the other two models while still maintaining satisfying bass performance. This more balanced presentation allows finer details to come through that can occasionally be masked by the warmer, bass-heavier tuning of the W501 and others in the lineup. Combined with what I perceive to be the largest soundstage of the three, the MDR-A50LV delivers a spacious and highly engaging listening experience. In terms of technical performance, its clarity and detail retrieval were among Sony’s best in their earphone lineup, impressive even when compared with modern earbuds such as the AirPods and the Yincrow RW-3000. These earphones also feature Sony’s older flexible pivoting joint between the headband and driver housing, similar to the mechanism used on the MDR-W30. However, the folding design is more refined, utilizing a symmetrical mechanism with a sturdy metal hinge. Despite being a folding model, comfort remains excellent. Unfortunately, durability is one of the MDR-A50LV’s few weaknesses. The small plastic pieces at the top of the adjustable headband are prone to cracking with age. While they may appear cosmetic, they are actually structural components that keep the sliding plastic sections attached to the metal headband. Once these pieces fail, the sliders can separate from the metal band. Overall, the MDR-A50LV stands out as one of Sony’s best vintage earphones. It combines a spacious presentation, excellent detail retrieval, and still powerful bass. An easy recommendation if not factoring in price.
